Riouzig (or Rouzic) island hosts more than 20.000 gannet couples each year. They migrate here to reproduce, they all huddle close together and there’s no vegetation where they roost, that’s why the green and white contrast is so strong.

L’île Riouzig (ou Rouzic) abrite plus de 20 000 couples de fous de Bassan chaque année. Ils migrent là pour se reproduire, se regroupent très près les uns des autres et il n’y a pas de végétation là où ils nichent, c’est pourquoi le contraste entre vert et blanc est si fort.

All through the day, there’s an intense “air trafic” of gannets landing, taking off, and circling above the island, looking like a buzzing hive of white and black birds.

Toute la journée, il y a un « traffic aérien » intense de fous qui atterrissent, décollent, et font des tours au-dessus de l’île, ça ressemble à une ruche bourdonnante d’oiseaux blancs et noirs.

Gannets are the biggest sea birds you can see in Brittany, they can have a 1.8m wingspan, they are gorgeous, with their black wingtips and yellow head. They are also quite heavy and take a while taking off from the water, but when they fly, they glide effortlessly.
Their method of fishing is to dive head first from a great height, stunning small fish, eating them underwater then coming up.

Les fous de Bassan sont les plus grand oiseaux marins qu’on peut voir en Bretagne, ils peuvent avoir une envergure jusqu’à 1,8m, ils sont superbes avec la pointe noire de leurs ailes et leur tête jaune. Ils sont aussi assez lourds et prennent pas mal de temps pour décoller de l’eau, mais quand ils volent, ils planent sans effort.
Leur méthode de pêche consiste à plonger la tête la première d’une grande hauteur, assommant les petits poissons qu’ils mangent sous l’eau, puis à ressortir.
