We enjoy another day of sun and wind, and get to the Fastnet lighthouse. It stands on a rock marking the most southerly point of Ireland. Behind the white lighthouse built at the end of the 19^th century, a black stump is the base of the first lighthouse built in 1853.

Nous avons encore la chance d’un journée ensoleillée et venteuse, et arrivons près du phare du Fastnet. Il est construit sur un rocher marquant le point le plus au sud de l’Irlande. Derrière le phare blanc construit à la fin du XIX^e siècle, le bloc noir est la base du premier phare construit en 1853.

As we tack around the rock and head north towards Crookhaven, two big trimarans appear, seemingly out of nowhere as they are very fast. There’s also an helicopter circling them… we wonder what it is about, but will learn later in the day that they are the leaders of the Fastnet race (Spindrift 2 & Banque Populaire VII). There are about 300 boats coming after them from Cowes in the U.K.!

Comme nous virons autour du rocher pour nous diriger au nord vers Crookhaven, deux gros trimarans apparaissent, comme surgis de nulle part tellement ils vont vite. Il y a aussi un hélicoptère qui fait des tours… nous nous demandons de quoi il s’agit, nous apprendrons plus tard que ce sont les deux leaders de la course du Fastnet (Spindrift 2 & Banque Populaire VII). Il y a à peu près 300 bateaux à leur poursuite venus de Cowes au Royaume-Uni !

Nous continuons au nord vers Crookhaven, marqué par le point blanc de son phare. À gauche on voit la pointe de Mizen head, le point le plus au sud sur le territoire irlandais.

Crookhaven is an extremely well sheltered mooring, a very elongated cove protected by a long rocky outcrop. There are square watchtowers overlooking the mooring. We loved our stay there!

Crookhaven est un mouillage extrêmement bien abrité, au fond d’une anse très allongée protégée par une langue rocheuse. Il y a des tours de guet carrées au-dessus du mouillage. Nous avons adoré notre séjour là-bas !
